Portsmouth 2006

July is a good time of the year, it’s warm, the best chance of sunshine you’re going to get in the good old UK and even if it does rain, it’s not cold rain, it’s warm summer rain. On top of all this there’s also the Portsmouth convention, which in all its years of running has only had one year when the weather was a bit iffy.

Held in the pyramid centre, right on the sea front of Southsea in Portsmouth it is one of the friendliest and most laid back one-day shows in the country. Every year there is a list of artists wanting to work who can’t get in as there is only so much room and Pete Lake the shows main organizer always gives first refusal to artists of the previous year first.

This years line up of artists included Dave Ayres & Ozzy of Skin Deep in Bristol, Barry Johnson of BJ’s tattoos in Southampton, Tony B of Tilbury tattoo, Mike Hicks of Spike of the Art in Plymouth, Doctor Feelgoods from Poole, Body Images from Portsmouth, Top Dog tattoo from Cosham, Paul O’Connor’s Tattoo Magic from Weymouth, Phil Kyle from France and Brendan Mudd of Inkfish Tattoo in Maidstone, Kent to name just some of the working artists.

From the minute the doors opened there was a steady stream of people coming into the hall and it wasn’t many minutes before you could hear the sound of tattoo machines buzzing into life. By mid afternoon the hall was packed and was almost unbearably hot, so there was no reason for anybody to have much on in the way of clothing and a lot of work was being readily shown off. About 3pm the judging of the tattoo categories kicked off and that kept people entertained for a few hours as the judging is done in the main hall in front of the stage.

During the course of the day there was various entertainment on the stage in the form of singers but not so loud that it was hard to hear yourself think which is how any entertainment that is on at a convention should be if it’s in the same area as the artists and traders are trying to work.

Before long it was time for the presentations of trophies for the various tattoo categories and after that was a suspension pull and piercing show by Alex, who is getting quite a name for himself for such shows nowadays. Then before you knew it another Portsmouth Tattoo convention was over and lots of happy if tired and hot people were making their way home.

My thanks go to Pete and the crew for their hospitality and helpfulness once again and if you haven’t been to the Portsmouth show before look out for it during July 2007.
